Comprising a series of marshes and lagoons on the east bank of the Cauca River, the Laguna de Sonso Nature Reserve, in the Andes mountains of Colombia, contains the last extensive remnant of original natural wetland in the Cauca Valley. The reserve was declared a natural wetland in October of 1978, and is infected by the Water Hyacinth, an invasive species from the Amazon Rainforest that has caused other invasive problems elsewhere. Many birds are found in the reserve, including the Fulvous Whistling Duck, Blue-Winged Teal, Osprey, Wattled Jacana, Black-Necked Stilt, Cocoi Heron, Striated Heron, Anhinga, and the Neotropic Cormorant. Exclusive mammals found in the Laguna de Sonso include  the Common Opossum.
