The Journey of Cygnus the Alaskan Malamute: Chapter 1

Cygnus the Alaskan Malamute was sleeping on his doggy bed in his owner’s home in Miami
when he woke to a thud. He startled up and went to the source of the sound to investigate. His
owner was carrying a suitcase down the stairs and was making a ruckus. He put the suitcase
in the car and came back up to get more things. After he was done putting all the luggage in
the carl he started it up. Cygnus thought that he was going to the store to buy more useless
human objects, so he went to his doggy bed to get some more sleep. Humans always needed
more.In his opinion, Cygnus thought that humans owned more than they needed. In his owner’s
house, there was a huge bed just for the owner, and assorted rooms for different purposes.
On the contrary, Cygnus only had a small doggy bed in a cage he could barely fit into. Humans
also had fancy meat that smelled and tasted good, that dogs weren’t allowed to eat. Cygnus
had been sitting by his owner, trying to get his attention and be rewarded with meat, but all he
got was a pat on the head. “Humans discriminate against dogs,” thought Cygnus. “We are just
as smart as humans, and can even understand some of their language, like “sit” and “no”, but
they don’t understand a single word of our language. They command us to sit and so we obey,
but when we tell them to open the door, all we get is “Stop barking! Bad dog!”.” Cygnus was
interrupted by his owner, who was coming back up the stairs. Cygnus was pretty sure that his
owner forgot his little rectangle, which he tapped on and took with him all the time. Humans also
owned bigger rectangles, which were similar to the smaller ones, except that they had a lid.
There were also foldable rectangles, which had little square buttons on top that made a clicking
noise when pressed, and huge rectangles that had moving pictures on them, and were fixed to
the wall. His owner was grabbing his Bucket of Necessities, which included Cygnus’s food bowl,
water bowl, food, his toys, and his leash. Cygnus was curious. If his owner was loading his
Bucket of Necessities onto the car, then that meant that Cygnus was going somewhere.
He followed his owner, who immediately put him in his cage. The cage was loaded onto the car
and his owner went back into the house to get other things. Eventually, when the owner was
done preparing for the trip, he drove the car out of the driveway, onto the street. Cygnus,
who was stuffed in the backseat in his cage, had no idea where he was going, and what all that
luggage that was beside his cage was for. "Hey Cygnus, why are looking so sad? We’re going
to your home in Alaska!” called his owner, from the driver’s seat. “Home? In Alaska? Where is
Alaska?” thought Cygnus. The only home he had was at his owner’s house in Little Havana,
Miami, Florida. The car sped down the highway, en route to the airport. Cygnus was confused.
At first, he thought that he was going to the doggy park. Then, he cowered as he thought of
arriving at the dreaded veterinarian’s office. When the car made an unexpected turn off the
highway, Cygnus was on an unfamiliar road. That was when he knew that something exciting
was going to happen. One incident in which Cygnus was on an unfamiliar road, he ended up
at a strange building, with many humans who were chatting with his owner. They gave him
many exotic treats, such as something greasy called “bacon”. Another time, he even met a
dog whose name was Scooter, and they ended up being friends. So many things could happen.

“I wonder where I’m headed now,” said Cygnus. “Maybe I might meet another dog, or see
a cluster of really tall buildings called a city. But what’re all these boxes for? I’ve certainly smelled
them in a closet in my owner’s house, but I’ve never seen them.”. Cygnus could also smell
various other items in the boxes, such as clothing, electronics, and books. He was bewildered,
with so many things to think about. Cygnus soon became lost in his thoughts and fell asleep.
